While ‘gauged’ and ‘ungauged’ refer to the back of the slate tile, the other classifications refer to its surface. It also is more prone to spalling, which is when newly installed slate floors chip and become dusty before settling, usually for the first three months. Ungauged slate is generally used more in outdoor applications, such as stepping-stones. Slate, on the other hand, is cleaved along its natural graining. This classification of gauged or ungauged is generally unique to slate tiles, because tiles of other natural stone, such as granite or marble, are cut to size. Gauged tiles, while typically more expensive, will save you on labor costs because their backs have been ground down to a consistent flatness, which results in the tiles being pretty much uniform in size, with a thickness of about 1/16 of an inch. This can make installation more difficult, requiring techniques such as ‘back buttering,’ or building up adhesive on the back of the tile in order to make it lie flat. Ungauged slate tile flooring can be installed with either side of the tile facing up, and the thickness of the tile tends to vary between 1/8 of an inch and ½ an inch. When slate tiles are in their most natural state, known as ‘ungauged,’ they are not uniform in size, and feature uneven, rough surfaces on both the front and the back of the tile. While the color, quality, density, and permeability of slate can all be affected by the location it was quarried from, the main classifications for slate tiles are based on manufacturing. Slate is probably the most common natural stone in general use. Slate tiles are used not only for flooring, but also wall tiling, back splashes, stepping stones, roofing, and a variety of other uses. Slate is quarried around the world as well as domestically, but is mainly manufactured in Asia. Slate is quarried in large slabs, which are then cleaved, parallel to the foliation, into tiles of generally uniform size. It is often black, dark green, and gray, but can also include instances of red, purple, gold, and blue. Slate is a durable, finely foliated, and brittle stone, which comes in a wide range of colors, depending on the location and minerals of the slate in question. These are all then compressed over long periods of time by heat and pressure until they bond into a homogenous, finely grained stone, which we know as slate. These minerals and sediments include quartz, mica, muscovite, calcite, and often times biotite, chlorite, hematite, and pyrite, with occasional instances of apatite, graphite, kaolinite (the main mineral in ceramic clay), magnetite, zircon, and feldspar. Slate is a metamorphic rock, which (if you’ll recall your elementary school geology) simply means that it is formed over long periods of time out of other existing rock types. Slate is a natural stone flooring material that is quarried from out of the earth, usually from mountains. So our team decided that we would fill the gaps and give you this post with everything you ever wanted to know about slate tile flooring. Slate tile flooring is a an exceptionally beautiful and durable natural stone flooring option offered by Floor Coverings International of Largo and Seminole, FL, but there’s not a whole lot of information on it.

The intent is to show how Adobe Connect, and technologies like it–or of it, as in components of it–can open paths to different kinds of seminar experiences, moving us out of the 19th century graduate student tradition and into one more fitting of 21st century new media scholarship. As such, it will introduce our approaches to utilizing Adobe Acrobat Connect Pro (referred to hereafter as Adobe Connect2) as part of our seminar practices. This paper, then, is an attempt to relate my (and a few classmates’) experiences using new media as an integrated component to augment (and improve) our learning experiences in graduate seminars. As Nathan Shedroff (2001) has told us, “The form of the experience is what gives it meaning since this is what people experience directly” (p. But our learning experiences are crucial, and if we seek to produce new media scholars then perhaps it is time to rethink the old media learning experience offered (and expected) of graduate students in graduate seminars. What about those that help, or could help, facilitate and/or improve learning? Rather than examine how technologies can impact or change our learning experiences (i.e., our seminar experiences), most conversations and research efforts, for faculty and graduate students alike, remain primarily focused on what we can make with new media. Even with the plethora of technologies available, we still tend to be drawn in by those for productive purposes. While this is not without value, I find myself asking, why do we limit new media to this productive paradigm? As if production, in our current corporate-model university (Readings, 1996) is the (only) point of new media, or, more generally, the (only) point of graduate education in/on new media. Scholarship on new media and new emerging technologies tends to focus on production, on productive possibilities, predominantly viewing new media through the lens of productive arts. Strings and Threads is a collection of Kill la Kill short stories I've written over the years. It is fairly large at 14 inches in length. Although, it has some problems (with some reeds sticking), it was worth the $15.00 I paid for it, as a new one is $350. I don’t have a bass harmonica, but I do have an old Chromatica that I picked up used. Used in harmonica orchestras, the chord harmonica joins the likes of the bass harmonica and the Chromatica – which is a specialty instrument that allows for glissando effects. Since it is a store display, I call it my "Merchant" Marine Band Harmonica. The author with an even larger model - a Hohner store display from the 1960s. If there were such an animal, it would have been considerably larger than the 23 inch Hohner Chord Harmonica 267/384. I have read of a 72 chord harmonica, but I have never seen a picture of this mythical beast. These full-sized 48 chord harmonicas may be the largest harps still in production, although larger models may have been available in the past. Suzuki also makes a full sized 48 chord harmonica for under $1,000. I believe I paid about $50.00 for it a number of years ago – which is much cheaper than the nearly two grand that one would need for the Hohner model. The Swan Compact Chord 48 is much smaller at 13 inches in length and only has four single reeds for each chord. While I have a chord harmonica, it is a cheaper version made in China by Swan. Most retailers, however, only charge around $1700.00 for this model. The Hohner Chord harmonica is extremely expensive listing at $2,469.99 new. On the lower set, the blow has minor chords and the draw chords are a combination of augmented and diminished chords. The top row or deck has major chords in the blow position and 7th chords in the draw position. Like the bass harmonica, it is hinged in order to give the options of more notes, and hence, 48 chords (with 4 sets of double reeds per chord). Hohner Chord Harmonicas are huge with a length of 23 inches. It was obvious that two jaw harps were used, but the video indicates that John Entwhistle played a bass harmonica while Townshend is playing a Hohner chord Harmonica. Seeing this video makes it all clearer as the instrumentation now makes sense. I was always intrigued by the harmonica sound on this song as I never could figure out how Townshend got the sound he did – until now. I did get “Crocodile Rock” late in 1972 as well, but purchased it at H.L. I bought both of these records at Gimbles that same year. The Who’s next single, “The Relay” (another non LP release), and Pete Townshend’s “Who Came First” LP were released on the Track label distributed by MCA. If I am correct, Elton John’s “Crocodile Rock/Elderberry Wine” single was the first single on MCA – I bought that one as well. The Bruswick label was not included as MCA had sold this trademark to Jackie Wilson's manager, Nat Tarnopol. That year, the Music Corporation of America consolidated all of its labels (Decca, Coral, Kapp, Uni, Vocalian, and MCA Special Products) into one label: MCA Records. It also was the last record by The Who to be released on Decca Records in America. I’m not sure what motivated me to buy this single, but I had penchant for getting 45s that were not slated to be released on albums – and “Join Together” would not appear on an LP until the compilation album “Join Together” (later named as “Rarities Volume II”) was issued 10 years later. While National Record Mart was just outside Gimbels’ entrance in Eastland’s “Underground Mall,” Gimbles often had singles before NRM and I would often buy them there without hearing them first. I remember buying this single at Gimbles’ record department in the Eastland Shopping center in North Versailles, PA. She felt it was her best option.Īfter Suzy’s surgery, my parents, Stan and I were all at the hospital anxiously awaiting the results. Suzy would be left with a small scar but no more cancer. He would then do an implant ten days later. This surgeon suggested performing a subcutaneous mastectomy, a procedure in which the outside of the breast is left intact, but an incision is made and the breast tissue is removed. They refrain from using the word cure because cancer can recur.īut that, of course, is exactly what Suzy wanted to hear, and who could blame her? Like many women, and for that matter men, too, Suzy was of the frame of mind that the doctor was always right. Even the most respected cancer experts in the country (which he was certainly not) do not talk about recovery in terms of surviving cancer or remission. According to Suzy, this surgeon told Suzy he could cure her. He was very handsome, very suave and seemed very self-confident. It is important, if you are to learn from our mistakes, that I tell you a little bit about this surgeon. Our family doctor called in a surgeon to review Suzy’s case. My sister was terrified, naturally, but adamant against having a mastectomy. So when you are told you’ve got a life-threatening disease, and the treatment sounds more heinous than the thought of a little lump in the breast, it is understandable that a woman uneducated about cancer might opt for no treatment at all. There is rarely any pain associated with breast cancer in its early stages. The most difficult concept to grasp about cancer, I think, is the fact that when it is first detected the patient usually feels just fine. None of us knew enough to inquire about seeking information from a major cancer center or from a group of physicians associated with one in Peoria. Suzy trusted him with her cancer the same way she did with her measles. The truth of the matter is that growing up in the small town of Peoria, our family had been treated our whole lives by one doctor. If I had only known then what I know now. What happened from this point on is still difficult for me to talk about because I am so much more knowledgeable on the subject today. At the age of 33, Suzy had breast cancer. When I got off the plane, my father was waiting there alone with an expression on his face I will never forget. A biopsy is the surgical removal and microscopic examination of tissue to see if cancer cells are present. Her doctor had found a lump in her breast that was not a cyst. After graduating, I packed up my bags and moved to Dallas, Texas, home of my father’s older sister.Īlthough we were separated by distance, Suzy and I spoke every day by phone in the late afternoon.Īs if it were yesterday, I can remember the phone call I received from Suzy one Tuesday afternoon. I felt independent and responsible and ready to take on the world. I was active in many school projects and finally began to have confidence in myself. Eventually, she married her college sweetheart, Stan Komen.Ĭollege, for me, was the first time I felt I belonged anywhere. Suzy came back to Peoria when she graduated from college and got a job modeling locally. The boys didn’t know I was alive, except that I was Susan Goodman’s younger sister. I was still a big, sort of clumsy girl with two left feet. Suzy tried desperately to teach me about the pretty things in life: how to fix my hair, apply makeup and coordinate my wardrobe. I was a tomboy and a mischief-maker and delighted in nothing more than spending hours galloping around on horseback. I developed my own way of getting attention. I, on the other hand, was bigger, heavier and taller than most of my friends and her friends. She was the star of our hometown of Peoria, Illinois-the high school homecoming queen, the college beauty queen. She was beautiful and kind and loving, not only to me but to everyone. Growing up, Suzy and I were just about as close as two sisters can get. You should also place your router closer to the middle of your home or workplace for the strongest signal and even coverage. Ironic, considering how hard Edison had tried to make talkies stick in 1913. A slick narrative is nothing to sneeze at.Ĭrosland is probably best remembered for his work in sound he directed both Don Juan and The Jazz Singer, which were instrumental in popularizing synchronized scores and then talking pictures. This may sound like odd praise to modern eyes but this was one of director Alan Crosland’s very first directing jobs, if not his first, and he was just twenty-two at the time. “The continuity of the story as picturized is remarkable for its smoothness of action,” the review adds. Motion Picture News was enthusiastic for Raymond McKee and Robert Cain’s performances as David Balfour and Alan Breck. Reviews for this film adaptation had similar praise. It’s an exciting time period, it has colorful characters and Stevenson knew how to keep the action moving. There’s a reason why Kidnapped is still considered to be one of the finest adventure books. David and Alan escape to the shore where they are implicated in an assassination and have to go on the run. Hoseason and his men mean to murder Alan for his money but David warns him and, as it turns out, a whole crew of cutthroats is no match for Alan’s sword. And Captain Blood would be a great double feature with Kidnapped.) Turns out, they picked the wrong victim. Kidnapped opens six years after Bonnie Prince Charlie was defeated. Charles, who was the grandson of James, tried to disengeorge Britain but was defeated. In any case, James II was kicked out, William and Mary replaced him and opened the door to Anne and just a ton of Georges. (The Jacobites were the supporters of the descendants of James II, who was dethroned for the crime of exiling Captain Peter Blood… I am informed that I have been getting too much history from the movies. Of the coast of Scotland, the ship hits a smaller vessel and the sole survivor is Alan Breck (Robert Cain), a Jacobite rebel who is carrying a generous supply of cash. When the cabin boy is murdered by one of the crew in a drunken fit, David is made to take his place, which strikes me as asking rather a lot of a kidnappee. This plan goes off without a hitch and David finds himself sailing away with the brutal Captain Hoseason (Franklyn Hanna) and his crew of cutthroats. Kidnapped AND forced into a customer service job? The noive! After Ebenezer’s attempt at a MWAHAHA “accident” fails, he decides to hire a ship of brigands to kidnap David and sell him in the Carolinas. The plot of Kidnapped involves David Balfour (Raymond McKee, you probably already know him from either Down to the Sea in Ships or Sennett’s Smith Family comedy series) trying to get his inheritance from his Uncle Ebenezer (Joseph Burke playing to the cheap seats). New York and New Jersey locations stand in for Scotland but the Edison team did obtain what was described as an “old brig” and launched it off the coast of Sandy Hook for the nautical scenes. Kidnapped is the earliest known feature-length adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson’s popular novel set just after the Jacobite Rebellion. Nothing better than a ship battle on an actual ship. Edison’s features often showed remarkable ingenuity and at the very least, they were a solid night’s entertainment. There is a common narrative that Edison’s later films, made long after the glory days of Edwin S. The attempt to spark a talkie revolution with Kinetophone technology had failed, there had been a nitrate fire and motion pictures had firmly embraced feature films, something Edison and many of the other pioneering studios had failed to anticipate and so they were playing catch-up. In 1917, the Edison film studio was on its last legs. So, please read this review with that fact in mind. So, I am not exactly a disinterested party and have the films practically memorized (while authoring the DVD, I had to watch the entire program from beginning to end every time I made even the smallest change in order to check for any flaws). The campaign was a success and the film is now available to the general public. Charlie is My Darlingĭisclosure: In November of 2017, I launched a Kickstarter to release Kidnapped and the four short films that originally accompanied it on DVD.
